Ardebil Carpets

Among the most famous carpets in the world, they have taken their name from the homonymous town of Ardebil, which is located near the Caspian Sea, in Northwestern Persia. A highlight of the carpet collection that is found in the Victoria and Albert Museum is an Ardebil. It is the only one of the very few preserved old carpets on which the date 1539, according to our calendar, (946 Persian date) is shown in the weave. The first Ardebil carpets with designs of flowers and various medallions are simple, without symbols and resemble carpets from the city of Tabriz. The newer Ardebil carpets are very different from the old ones. The designs have influences from old Caucasian carpets, mainly geometric designs from the carpets Sirvan and Karabah.
